NVS at Hampshire Potato Day @ Testbourne Community School

NVS Hants DA will be at the Hampshire Potato Day in Whitchurch. We look forward to welcoming visitors to our stand and answering any questions you may have regarding growing vegetables, for both the table and for show.

This event is perfect for all the family. As well as a huge variety of seed potatoes to purchase, it is also an opportunity to buy peas & beans to grow, onion, garlic and shallot sets and flower bulbs.  There will be a selection of stands selling a range of products from plants, jams and handmade cards. There will be refreshments available and activities for children as well as a free coloured seed potato for under 12s.

Adults £2, Children free.

Saturday and Sunday – 10am – 3pm.

Fruit Pruning with Chris Bird @ Minstead Study Centre

Fruit Pruning trees

Hands on practical day with Chris Bird. Senior lecturer at Sparsholt College, Chris coordinates the Colleges RHS Chelsea Flower Show garden, winning seven gold medals. He has also recently published The Fundamentals of Horticulture for the RHS.

Fruit trees that are not pruned become congested and unproductive. During the day you will learn how to improve the health and productivity of trees by appropriate pruning. The course will provide participants with practical skills through hands on experience of the renovation and ongoing pruning of trees and will cover all types of tree from recently planted to mature and trained examples. Although concentrating on apple trees Chris knows everything there is to know about fruit and there will be the chance to look at currants and berries as well.

The course is limited to 12 places to ensure that all participants have ample opportunity for practical work. No prior knowledge is required.
Please feel free to bring your own tools (for example secateurs/pruning saw) although some tools will be available at the Centre.
Tea & Coffee provided and homemade soup for lunch.

Federation Day 2018 @ Gilbert White Room, Westley Court, Sparsholt College

Federation Day – Sparsholt College

All member Societies are invited to send representatives to the Gilbert White Room, Westley Court,  Sparsholt College on Federation Day.

Lunch for those attending the morning session can be provided but must be pre-booked on the order form at the bottom of the Conference  letter previously circulated

The programme is as follows:

Members Conference

0930 – 1000                    Tea/Coffee (50p)

1000 – 1100                    John Penney will talk on setting up a show.

                                        John has been chairman of the flower show committee at the New Forest                                         Show. He will cover the setting up of a show and the history of some shows.

 1100 — 1200                    For the second part of the morning we will hold a number of small workshops                                          covering various aspects of showing and what can be done to encourage more                                          exhibitors, especially younger ones.
                                         Other aspects to be considered are stewarding, judging and show                                           administration

These will be of interest to all show secretaries and show organisors, particularly anyone new to this aspect of shows.

Usual collection will be taken as you leave the hall

Annual General Meeting,  Presentations and Quiz Final

The Annual General Meeting of the Hampshire Federation of Horticultural Societies will be held in the Gilbert White Room, Westley Court at Sparsholt College Hampshire, Sparsholt, Winchester at 2.00 pm on Saturday 24th February 2018.  Representatives of your Society are invited to attend.

The programme for the afternoon will be:

14.00                  Annual General Meeting.

15.00                  Tea and Coffee available (50p).

15.30 approx.     Inter-Society Quiz Final.

17.00 approx.     Presentation of Quiz Awards and Raffle.

17.30 approx.     Close.

Willow Obelisk Workshop @ Minstead Study Centre

Willow Workshop

After the success this year, Louise Arthur from ‘Rough Around the Hedges’ will be delivering another willow workshop, you will learn a simple weave using long willow withies to create your own unique willow planter to take home with you.

This is a fun workshop suitable for all abilities.

You will be working from the ground upwards so there will be some kneeling involved and you may wish to bring a kneeler and wear work clothes. A pair of secateurs and some gardening gloves may also be useful.

Tea & coffee will be provided.
Pick either the morning or afternoon workshop to suit you.

If you are new to growing vegetables, Rosie Yeomans will demonstrate some vegetable gardening techniques to give you the confidence to prepare, sow and plant your new vegetable patch ready for a bumper harvest.

Rosie will be well known from her work with Radio 4 Gardeners Question Time, contribution  to BBC Gardeners World Magazine and appearances on Radio Solent ‘Good Life’.
